The Last Bird’s Song

 This poem is quite sentimental to me. It’s about a time on holiday in 1994 with my boyfriend (now husband!) and two of my best friends when we were 16. I’m returning to the same campsite in Salisbury today, so I’ll have a look to see if there are as many shooting stars.

Joust

I was inspired by one of my favourite films, A Knight’s Tale (starring Paul Bettany and Heath Ledger) for this poem. Some people in my writing group loved this, and some people didn’t!

The Missing Years

At university this was one of our tasks: “Try ‘writing back.’ Borrow from another author and make it your own.”

I used the young girl, Dolores Haze, from Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. In the book she goes missing for three years, but at the end the reader finds out she went with Clare Quilty, (despite the name, please note that this is a man) whom she was devoted to, and she eventually left him after he tried to make her, “blow all those dumb boys” whilst being filmed.
