I still haven’t worked out what to do when I grow up! I’m mainly a writer, an artist, and a fairytale dressmaker with various crafty hobbies! Here (and on YouTube) I share bits of my life, thoughts, and what I’m learning along the way. Let’s find magic and inspiration; join me for this creative living adventure!

You can’t trust March

This is a mini story I wrote in half an hour at Writers’ group last week. We were given the topic: ‘You can’t trust March’ and it had to be written in dialogue.

‘Oh I wouldn’t do that if I were you.’
‘What?’
‘That – planting out those begonias.’
‘Why not?’
‘It’s far too soon.’
‘Too soon? It’s lovely and warm. I’m in a t-shirt.’
‘But you could have your coat on tomorrow. You can’t trust March.’

‘Oh I wouldn’t do that if I were you.’
‘What?’
‘That – covering those plants in bubble wrap.’
‘Well you were right weren’t you. It’s meant to be frosty tomorrow. I’m not going to dig them all up now.’
‘Oh I don’t think it’s going to be frosty; it’s going to be windy. You can’t trust March.’

‘What are you doing in my garden?
‘What does it look like I’m doing? I’m collecting the bubble wrap that blew over the fence.’
‘Well I did tell you.’
‘Well, you don’t have to be such an insufferable know-it-all. Anyway, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.’
‘What?’
‘Hang out your washing. It’s going to snow later.’
‘Of course it isn’t, it’s March for goodness sake!’
‘Yes, but you can’t trust March.’
‘But it’s not going to snow.’
‘If you say so.’

‘Watch it.’
‘Watch what?’
‘You’re flicking grit onto my car.’
‘Oh, you mean this grit I bought to clear my drive of all this…what do you call it? Oh yes; all this snow that’s all around us. This snow that obviously doesn’t fall in March.’
‘Well how are your begonias doing in all this snow? I’m sure they just love it.’
‘They’re probably doing a lot better than your washing. I’m sure icy stiff trousers will be very comfortable.’
‘Just be careful what you’re doing with that stuff.’
‘Careful where you tread or you’ll slip over again and I don’t think I could stop myself from laughing a second time.’
‘Just shut up and let me have some grit will you?’
‘Is that your polite way of asking?’
Please may I have some grit for my driveway.’
‘Yes you may, as you asked so nicely.’

‘Are you there?’
‘Yes.’
‘Well don’t look over the fence for an hour or so will you?’
‘Why not?’
‘I’m sunbathing.’
‘Well I wouldn’t do that if I were you.’
‘So now you’re going to tell me it’s going to rain are you?’
‘No-I was just going to say I hope you’ve got sun cream on – it’s very hot.’
‘Oh – ok. Thanks.’

‘Where are you off to?’
‘Well I thought I’d go to the garden centre. It’s April tomorrow.’
‘Oh, I’ll come with you, I need some new bedding plants. Can I share your umbrella?’

Have you heard of the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon? Or perhaps you’ve heard it called ‘Frequency bias’? Have you ever looked around for your new car; chosen a make and model you’re interested in, and then all of a sudden you see it everywhere? It’s the car in front of you in the traffic jam, and then you walk past two more as you walk across the car park to the Tescos entrance. It seems like the universe knows you want that car, and decides to show it to you ALL the time…

Dance of the Butterflies A semi-circle bay of liquid turquoise as still as a deep secret and barely a sound as the languid waves touched the pebbled beach. It was so much warmer than expected; unneeded layers draped over our arms. Merlin panting; concerning us for lack of fresh water until we found a Jurassic filtered stream. All of us excited for his first trip to the sea All of us excited for our first day to be free. I’d only thought yesterday I was yet to see a butterfly, but as we walked the stony track to the car we saw a pair of them, unidentifiable by their urgency. Enchanted by each others’ spirit they were trapped in their frenzied jive of spring. Unable to leave each other, or to leave the dance Unable to be completely released; unable to take the chance.   Whispers of the Stones Imagining recollections of the lives of here The way they felt; the joy, the fear The mundane, their day to day The colours of spring, the winter grey The salty breezes absorbed in their bones Their secrets and memories whispered by the stones   I’ve started an art journal! And these are the words I wrote to go with the mixed media art I came up with. It was all inspired by the first time we were allowed to leave the house for actual fun! We went to Tyneham Village – an abandoned place where everyone was evacuated for the Second World War, and weren’t allowed back. A short walk from there is Worbarrow Bay; and with the sun shining, the sea really did look turquoise. If you’d like to see our day out, I have started back on YouTube again, and it’s in this week’s video:
