When looking for inspiration for my clothes, I usually look to history – anything from the last century and further back. However the 1920s and 30s are recently starting to take my notice…..
Yesterday morning I lounged on the sofa before the kids had fallen out of bed and treated myself to breakfast pudding – a box of pralines my cousin had given me for Christmas. Now, nothing goes better with breakfast pudding than a delicious costume drama – in this case, the Downton Abbey Christmas special. Oh my god, I loved it! The best Downton episode ever! (Mr Carson and Mrs Hughes held hands at the end – so exciting! Makes up for last year’s debacle – just.) Anyway, the costumes were an absolute delight. My 
favourite was the grey silk dress worn by Cora Crawley. The embellished chiffon of the neckline and shoulders was stunning. I wasn’t entirely sure of the pouffyness at the hips of Rose’s dresses, but Lady Mary Crawley always looks beautifully elegant and the Dowager Countess of Grantham exudes gothic queen, which I love. Bowler hats off to costume designer Caroline McCall.
