Solvang and Nojoqui Falls county park, California

It looked very close to the coast on the map, but turned out to be quite a long way out of our route. We thought we’d have a go at visiting somewhere different in the the Rough Guide guidebook.

It was hours out of our way! I really thought it was half an hour at most. So by the time we actually reached Solvang we didn’t even bother getting out the car. It was where the Danish settled, but I kept getting it confused with Dutch as there were windmills everywhere. I wanted to go to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, but there wasn’t time. So, we just filmed the town with the video camera as we drove through!

We did stop at the park though for a picnic lunch and a walk to the waterfall. Described as a “10 minute easy walk” to a 75′ waterfall, everyone agreed to it. It was a hot day, but all in shaded woods, it definitely was a pleasant walk, but definitely 15-20 minutes, and definitely not easy. It was quite steeply uphill in places. We kept saying this waterfall had better be worth it. Well, here’s the picture:

Felt like suing the Rough Guide. We’d totally wasted our time, which could’ve been spent enjoying Big Sur, instead of driving along it in the dark!
