Chicken help

Time to make the most of the beautiful weather and get gardening. The Garden Centre was packed this morning – only just found a parking space. Blowsy and Talulah helped me get the vegetable beds ready.

I don’t know whether thousands of woodlice are completely harmless to plants or not, but to be on the safe side, I led my two faithful hens into the tyres I use as raised veg beds, and left them to it. They performed a sterling job. They were having the time of their lives and I was entertained at the same time watching them kick their legs about foraging in the compost.

Then I sowed the last of my packet of sugar snap peas – they’re now out of date so I put them in (with the kind help of my daughter) pretty close together as I don’t know how well they’ll do this time. I also scattered about half a packet of mixed salad leaves. I’m not holding my breath for these – last year I got one red type lettuce  – nothing else – and it tasted horrible!

That was last week. This week I popped over to Rocky Mountain Garden Centre outside Shepton Mallet and bought some salad plants. Three Ridge cucumber plants; that was the only outdoor variety they had. Last year I had three different types, but they grew so entangled I couldn’t tell which was which to compare. I’ve got a feeling that Ridge had the most prickles, but not sure. As I peeled them all anyway, it doesn’t really matter.

Two tomato plants – an orange cherry tomato and a normal one (will try and update post with names shortly). And a row of iceburg lettuce seedlings. As I said, I’m not banking on the seeds growing, I thought I’d get a head start with these and at 89p for about 15 – less than the cost of one fully grown lettuce, I thought it would be worth a try.

Garden,
