Gok’s Fashion Fix

On Channel 4, Thursdays at 8pm. I’ve got a few things to say about this programme.

First of all, I’m so glad a decent fashion programme is on the telly. (The Clothes Show on Living has more minutes devoted to what’s been on earlier and what’s coming up later, than what’s actually supposed to be happening! They also use the word ‘fashionista’ far too often.) It manages to tell you what’s in fashion, whilst also letting you know you should try and have your own style. It tells you not to be afraid to customise your clothes, but I have to say, it gets a little annoying when Gok does things that are impossible to replicate at home – such as when the model is literally sewn into her outfit and the work would have to be cut up to get her out of it again.

Which brings me on to the other thing that’s been on my mind. Gok came onto our screens with ‘How to look good Naked,’ a great show that embraced women’s shapes and boosted self confidence, without putting them down in the first place (Trinny and Susannah). (Although I think it went too far in the last series with the shop window, and by then I’d completely had enough of terms such as ‘Fairy Gokmother’, ‘you’ve been Gokked’, ‘Goktastic’. Alright already – we understand that your name is Gok!) But the point is, it slammed the media for making us all want to be skinny by using tiny models all the time, and then he goes and uses tiny models himself on this new show. I’m sorry, but you can’t start us off loving you for loving fat girls, and then use your standard size 6 model on your next show – that’s no way to get loyal fans.

There’s no reason why he couldn’t have at least gone for size 10 -12 models – even designer clothes would fit those sizes. And then to have skinny celebrities on with an item of their clothing and scream ‘Who thinks they can fit into this then.’ Just change the word ‘fit’ to ‘get’ and I’ll be a little happier!
